Reading is a code - it does not come naturally like talking
Children are wired to learn to talk just by being around it. Reading is different: printed letters standing for sounds is an invention that every single child has to be deliberately taught. So a slow start is not a red flag - it just means the code has not been cracked yet.
Knowing the alphabet is not the same as reading
Singing the ABCs or naming letters is a great start, but it is a different skill from linking each letter to its sound and blending them together. Plenty of children know every letter and still cannot yet sound out a simple word like "cat". That next step has to be practised.
Some children just click later - and catch right up
